Why Monte-Carlo Club Chose Nicaragua for Its Cigars

When it comes to premium cigars, a few origins naturally stand out: Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Monte-Carlo Club® was born in Estelí, Nicaragua.

That choice was not accidental. Each great cigar-producing region has its own history, soils and distinctive way of expressing tobacco. For Monte-Carlo Club, the challenge was to find an origin that matched the style we were looking for: character, depth and presence, without compromising balance and elegance.

We found it in Estelí.

Estelí, at the Heart of Nicaraguan Cigars

Located in northern Nicaragua, Estelí has become one of the major centres of the premium cigar world. The region brings together tobacco cultivation, expertise and cigar manufacturing in an environment deeply connected to tobacco.

The soils of this part of Nicaragua produce leaves known in particular for their structure and personality.

Yet an Estelí cigar does not necessarily have to be an excessively powerful cigar.

Everything depends on how the tobacco is selected and blended.

That was precisely what interested us: working with tobacco capable of providing a genuine backbone to the cigar, then shaping that intensity towards greater balance.

Nicaragua: a Palette Rather Than a Single Taste

It would be too simplistic to speak of a single “Nicaraguan taste”.

Estelí, Condega and Jalapa each have different characteristics, giving the blender a palette with which to work on structure, aroma and finesse.

This diversity played an important role in the creation of Monte-Carlo Club.

We were looking for a medium to medium-full profile, with enough presence to express a clear personality while maintaining refinement throughout the experience.

The result was never intended to be showy or dominated by strength.

It had to be balanced.

The Dominican Republic: Another Great Cigar Tradition

The Dominican Republic also holds an essential place in the world of premium cigars.

It has its own terroirs, tobacco varieties and a long tradition of cigar production. Many Dominican cigars are particularly appreciated for their balance, elegance and complexity.

Choosing Nicaragua for Monte-Carlo Club was therefore never about establishing a hierarchy between origins.

It was about identity.

We were looking for the particular combination of depth, earth, coffee and restrained spice that we could build around Nicaraguan tobaccos.

Honduras: Geographical Proximity, Distinct Identity

Honduras is another major tobacco and cigar-producing country, particularly around historic regions such as Danlí and Jamastrán.

Its proximity to Nicaragua might suggest similar expressions. Yet differences in terroir, tobacco varieties and blending choices result in distinct identities.

For Monte-Carlo Club, Estelí offered the starting point most consistent with the style we wanted to create: enough character to give the cigar a recognizable signature, while allowing that intensity to be shaped towards greater restraint and elegance.

A Nicaraguan Signature, an Ecuadorian Wrapper

Monte-Carlo Club’s identity does not, however, rely on a single origin.

Our blend combines the character of Nicaraguan tobacco with an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper.

This combination contributes to the cigar’s overall balance: structure and depth, while keeping its expression controlled and refined.

That is what we seek in every Monte-Carlo Club cigar: a cigar with a genuine personality, without allowing strength to overshadow elegance.

Estelí as a Starting Point

Monte-Carlo Club could have been born in another great cigar-producing region.

But it probably would not have had exactly the same personality.

That is what Estelí represents for us: not simply an origin written on a cigar box, but the starting point of the Monte-Carlo Club style.

From the Short Robusto to the Churchill, including the Robusto and Toro, each format offers a different interpretation of the same blend.

Four vitolas. One origin. One signature.
